Early June Garden Happenings

It's been a wet and chilly week around here, but I have a feeling that we'll be richly rewarded once the sun finally returns. In the meantime, here's a peek at what's been happening so far!

I love carefree perennials in the flower beds, but fill pots with annuals and herbs for color and immediate impact. The only real downside is that they need to be watered almost daily in the heat of summer.

I like pots in groups of three and I try different varieties and color combinations every year!

Here in Maryland, we are just transitioning from the spring flowering bulbs, shrubs and trees to the perennials.

The vegetable gardens are my husband's domain and they are off to a great start.

Yesterday I spotted the very first peas.

Last year we were overwhelmed with green beans, so the plan this year is to plant a half a row at a time.

This is the salad bed. We've already been enjoying the onions and radishes.

So there you have it, a quick garden tour between rain showers.

And here's my little garden helper, curls blowing in the breeze.
She likes to water, just like her mommy!

Your potted flowers are so beautiful, Sharon, and you've inspired me with the variety you've planted. Your peony is gorgeous; I must find a place in my yard to plant a peony! Our two tomato plants are about six inches tall still, and I'd love to hear your husband's secret for growing his. Some of his are already up to the tops of their cages! The most amazing growth in your garden this spring is from your little helper, though. Is this the first time I've seen Clare standing? She's growing SO fast! Her enthusiasm and joy for helping her grandma in the garden is reflected in those shining eyes and sweet smile. What a doll! Loved the tour!

Everything looks so lush and gorgeous! I'm jealous you can grow all of those veggies! I have deer who I just watched eat the blooms off my hydrangea, I did send the dogs out after it, and little bunnies who snacked on my newly planted vinca... Sometimes dealing with wildlife is very frustrating! I tend to plant lots of herbs because nothing but humans seem to eat them... Weird right?

I LOVE your potted flowers, Sharon!
I'm a big fan of potted gardens. They add so much charm to a patio and yard.
Your husbands garden is beautiful! Looks like you're not to far away from vegetables :0)
And that sweet baby girl at the end of your post is BEAUTIFUL!!
Have a great weekend,
Suzanne

Wow, you are going to have a huge haul of tomatoes this summer!! I am not sure how you could ever have too many green beans but planting them half at a time is a good solution. Your pots are gorgeous and you have a great eye for color. The perennials are looking great as well. Your little helper is a dolly. Have a good weekend!

I just love getting a glimpse of your garden Sharon. How wonderful to have all that space to grow your own salad :) I might try growing tomatoes in a barrel but I don't do well with them. I'd love to see a post on your tips for growing tomatoes.... I'm working in backyard today still trying to get our Palm trees planted. I want to join your Garden Linkup party one of these days! I have to remember to grab my camera for an update...

Oh Sharon, your garden just looks beautiful. Love the potted plants and I will try to do the same by planting different ones together. I must admit: I do not have a green thumb like you. Must be so nice to eat all those delicious veggies right from the yard! Such a sweet picture of Clare, can she lift up that watering can? That girl has muscles!

Your garden is beautiful Sharon. I have been adding color to the garden in our new home but it will take a few seasons to reap the rewards of my work in full. Enjoy your peaceful place & that cute little one of yours.
