Bakery Signs Inspired by Fixer Upper

I think we're all a bit obsessed with HGTV's hit show Fixer Upper. At the end of every episode I hear myself saying yelling out loud ..... "Joanna, please come redecorate my house!" And although that's probably not going to happen anytime soon, we can all add a little of that charming farmhouse style to our own homes with just a little inspiration. So let's start with signs. There are signs with big bold lettering in almost every episode of Fixer Upper. This is Joanna's own farmhouse kitchen. Dreamy, right?

And when I saw this bakery sign at The Magnolia Market, I knew I had to have one!

But $88 is a bit out of my budget, so of course I made one two of my own!

I've had these two bed foot boards in my basement for the longest time and always imagined them as signs.

I've used this sign technique before and it's super easy.  First I trimmed my boards and painted them creamy white. Then I printed out my letters on the computer in the Britannic Bold font. I flipped the letters over and rubbed a pencil around the outline of each letter. Then I placed the letters on the board and outlined them in pencil. You can see the faint outline of each letter on the board. Then I used a permanent marker to outline the letters on the wood. This helped keep my painting a little neater.

Then I just filled in the letters with black craft paint. A little angled artist brush works well for this. No need to be perfect. I then distressed the the whole board. That took care of the imperfections and added a nice aged look. I finished my sign with a coat of wax and that was it. Since I had two pieces of wood, I made a vertical and a horizontal sign.

I'd still love to have Joanna come redecorate my house. But in the meantime, I'll enjoy my bakery signs inspired by Fixer Upper!

I'm obsessed with Fixer Upper! My favorite part is always the reveal at the end of the show when I keep pausing my Tivo, trying to memorize every little farmhouse detail. (And aren't they just the cutest couple?) I LOVE your Bakery sign. It turned out beautifully! And so smart to save $88!

I just started watching Fixer Upper. I had kind of given up on HGTV for a while. lol She is a very talented lady. Looks like you found your own talent making that sign. That is the exact way I do my transferring, too, unless I happen to have some carbon paper on hand...remember THAT STUFF? lol

Your signs are wonderful!!!! xo Diana

I agree with you my husband and I both obsessed The thing is he is not a fix upper guy at all, but now he thinks he may try a few things.
Oh I have a friend that went to Easter services where Chip attended church as a youth and they told her he was a very ACTIVE young man. I bet he was a handful.
Luv your sign!!

Oh you are so clever. I love your signs and you know something funny? I actually have Fixer Upper on right now. I agree. I want Joanna to decorate my place too. Or at least let me use her crew. Although maybe Huntington Beach is too far hahaha

I really love that show too...my husband is a goofball like Chip, but I am not anything like Joanna (young, gorgeous, talented, etc.). Love that sign!

Love this project abd love the tutorial Sharon and I will certainly try to make a sign myself. I am always a bit mystified how to transfer words and letters but your tuto make it seem easier. It came out so nice!

I love that show too and fantasize about Joanna decorating my home. Your signs are terrific and I will never look at foot boards the same way again!

Great use of items you already had around the house! I'm a huge Fixer Upper fan, as well--Next we'll all want to find a silo to convert! :D
